Peace & Freedom Party Statement on SF Police Riot of 3/16/09
On the evening of Monday 16 March 2009, a number of clearly identifiable police officers engaged in an unprovoked riot in front of the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco. They beat demonstrators at random, for no apparent reason, with clear malice and intent to inflict serious injury. On behalf of the Peace and Freedom Party, I join in the demand that these clearly identifiable officers, whose images can be seen on multiple videos of the event, be arrested and charged with assault.

Statement of Peace and Freedom Party California State Chair on San Francisco Police Riot
On the evening of Monday 16 March 2009, a number of clearly identifiable police officers engaged in an unprovoked riot in front of the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco. They beat demonstrators at random, for no apparent reason, with clear malice and intent to inflict serious injury. On behalf of the Peace and Freedom Party, I join in the demand that these clearly identifiable officers, whose images can be seen on multiple videos of the event, be arrested and charged with assault.
This demonstration at the Israeli Consulate brought together members of the Jewish and non-Jewish communities in opposition to certain policies of the Israeli government, including the beatings and false arrests of demonstrators in Israel and the occupied territories. The demonstration was entirely peaceful up to the time of the police riot. I know that a number of members of the Peace and Freedom Party were there, but I do not yet know whether they were among those injured, or arrested on clearly false charges.
This statement is being provided to the District Attorney of the City and County of San Francisco. I would point out to the District Attorney that a failure to bring charges will be a declaration of bloody war on the citizens of San Francisco who wish to assemble peaceably to petition for redress of grievances. The people need to know that the city will back up the Constitution's guarantees, and if it won't, the people need to prepare appropriate action to remove corrupt officials who unleash violence against free speech.
After viewing video of the event, and I certainly hope that the District Attorney is now doing so, it should also be clear that the charges against the arrested demonstrators are false, and made up after the fact to attempt to conceal the nature of this police riot. Those charges should be dropped.
This criminal assault shows us that after the murder of Oscar Grant, it is apparent that more members of Bay Area police forces need to be reminded that they can no longer get away with violent crime in this age of video.
I hope that as many people as possible view the available video, and communicate to the District Attorney and other city officials their reaction. If justice is to be done, many people must immediately make clear that this behavior is not acceptable, charges must be filed and pursued, and the police who decided to join in the criminal assault must be removed from their positions.

No offense and I don't mean to junk up your posting, but charging those cops with assault, ain't gonna happen. All cops have a get out of jail card and all cops can get away with murder, and no cops will ever be reprimanded.

Not to rain on your rant, but perhaps you should show up at the Monday morning hearing of Johannes Mehserle, the former BART police officer who has been arrested and charged with the murder of Oscar Grant.

He has not yet been convicted, of course, but the lesson for SF cops and every other police officer in the U.S. is that everyone with a cellphone can Copwatch.

All cops are trained to be paramilitary. They don't care about you. All they want to do is crack skulls because they get paid good for when there is a riot and they love it when people try to push back because it gives them an excuse and the media will always back up their side before anybody else because the media belongs to them in a way. General society will always be soft on police. People have already accepted oppression as a normal part of their lives and that is why they don't know their oppressed. Their all a bunch of scared little sheep just towing the line as usual. I'm so tired of all the conformists in this country inlight everything that goes on everyday in the media. There should have been a revolution in America long time ago but because people are just too pussy to change anything, corrupt politicians, greedy institutions, and crooked cops get away with everything. The only people who really care dearly about the future are the ones who protest dispite all the heavy police presence. We live in a police state and nobody cares. Nobody is on our side but our selves. That's all we got. More power to those who are strong and stand up for them selves.

The Peace and Freedom party is far better than the Democrats but even the Greens . But even they seem to not quite get some realities . Like the role of Police in this society . I was informed by a friend in LA that at their recent party convention they passed a resolution condemming police brutality but calling for Police even accused of murder to be released on bail . Why ? Beats me . Because since it took a riot for Meheserle to be charged with murder why would we want to support this fascist killer being given a chance to flee the country ?
I suspect that Peace and Freedom are Socialists like the Social democrats in Europe who do not understand how our capitalist society really works . When everything else fails , brute force by the police .
