Please join us this Monday night for a powerful dramatization of the rebellion that exploded across Ireland in the 1920's. "The Wind that Shakes the Barley" follows the story of Irish peasants who fought off the the British Empire at a time when it was the most powerful army in the world. Starting from small ambushes against symbols of colonialism and tyranny in 1918, the IRA had won large scale support and control over the majority of Ireland in under two years.
The film is noted for its excellent examination of the 1921 treaty to split Ireland and the resistance in half, which proved to keep England's hopeless war alive into the 21st century. Neither the film nor those hosting the event sensationalize national liberation struggles. We will make space afterward for a discussion on the film and the warning it makes against struggling within a nationalist paradigm.
