The Crisis of Global Capitalism: A Talk by William I. Robinson
Click the link below to see a Talk by UCSB Sociology Professor William I. Robinson on the crisis of global capitalism. Robinson is the author of Promoting Polyarchy: Globalization, US Intervention, and Hegemony (1996), Transnational Conflicts: Central America, Social Change and Globalization (2003), A Theory of Global Capitalism (2004), and Latin America and Global Capitalism (2008).
Global capitalism is in deep crisis and alternative futures are in dispute. Neo-liberalism is moribund. What does the future hold? A New New Deal? Global fascism? Reconstituted socialism? Global collapse and regional warlordism? This crisis is not a repeat of the 1930s or the 1970s because world capitalism has experienced fundamental changes. Following Marx, we can understand crisis through the internal dynamics of capitalism. And following more recent global capitalism theorizing, we can make sense of the current crisis and distinct responses by looking at how the system has qualitatively evolved in recent decades.
