Empowering the Yard - the film
A 15-minute documentary film about incarceration, women, HIV/AIDS and peer education.
"Set in Oklahoma where more women are incarcerated per capita than anywhere else in the world, Empowering the Yard looks at HIV prevention from the perspective of incarcerated women who are using peer education to empower themselves, their families, and their communities." http://www.documentaryforhealth.sfsu.efolioworld.com/
Come hear the voices and stories of incarcerated women working for health and social justice.
Since the film's initial screening at SFSU in May 2008, Empowering the Yard has been entered and accepted to film festivals across the country and is going global. Empowering the Yard has been;
* Entered into the MadCat Women's International Film Festival and Shorts International Film Festivals in San Francisco, Silverdocs Discovery Channel Documentary Film Festival, Omaha Film Festival, Big Bear Lake Film Festival and the United Film Festivals in Chicago and New York
* Accepted and screened at the Tulsa, Oklahoma United Film Festival
* Selected as one of the semi-finalists at the 3rd Annual Show Off Your Shorts Film Festival in Beverly Hills
* Selected as one of 30 films that will tour US embassies around the world with the U.S. Department of State's American Documentary Showcase
With 1 in 100 Americans incarcerated and the growing rate of HIV/AIDS among young women, it is imperative that we listen and learn from one another.
