1/27 Mass Rally And March Called For To Defend SEIU UHW In Oakland From Stern Trusteeship
SEIU today imposed a trusteeship on its California affiliate, United Healthcare West. UHW leaders still occupy their headquarters in Oakland.
They have called upon members and supporters to assemble there at 5:00 p.m. today for a protest march. The destination has not been announced.
UHW is located on Thomas Berkley Way (20th St.) in Oakland, between Telegraph and San Pablo.
On Friday, SEIU officials in Washington, D.C. gave United Healthcare Workers (UHW) an ultimatum: support the undemocratic transfer of 65,000 nursing home and homecare workers out of UHW against their will, or face an immediate takeover and the expulsion of more than 70 healthcare workers who were elected to lead the local union. Today, UHW's elected executive board sent a letter challenging SEIU President Andy Stern to a fair vote by those 65,000 union members, and calling on him to accept workers' right to determine their own future.
