San Franciscans Celebrate into Wee Hours

by Randy Shaw via Beyond Chron
Wednesday, January 21, 2009 : Michelle Obama took a lot of slack from the traditional media during the campaign, after saying she was “proud” of her country for the “first time” in her adult life. But in San Francisco, we knew exactly what she meant. I went to four parties last night about town, as folks wildly and happily celebrated a new President we can be proud of into the wee hours.
At the LGBT Center, a young and diverse crowd talked about the work they’re doing to build a movement against Prop 8. At a warehouse in SOMA, artists danced the night away in funky costumes – with beautiful and creative Obama artwork on display in various rooms. And at El Rio, the Mission District’s ultimate hipster bar, lefty types who rarely have anything good to say about Democrats were proud that Barack Obama is our new President. For years, the Right (aided by the media) have said we’re a conservative country – and the Left has believed them. Last night, it felt so good for progressives to be happy – as we celebrated a new future, filled with hope for a better tomorrow.
