PROTEST THE ISRAELI ASSAULT ON GAZA
"Queers of the Plaza"
Saturday, January 10, 2008
3:00-4:00 p.m.
Harvey Milk Plaza (Castro & Market)
As progressive queers we won't buy into the hype that Israel is the "only democracy" in the Middle East, where queers can live freely. We say that queer liberation requires human liberation, and we join with all oppressed people and people of conscience to demand an immediate end to the siege of Gaza which makes life impossible for queer and straight people.

"As progressive queers we won't buy into the hype that Israel is the "only democracy" in the Middle East, where queers can live freely."
You probably shouldn't have used THAT wording since you could scarcely mean that it is just "hype" that ........
a) Israel is a democracy, probably the only one there (will discuss below)
b) Allows freedom of expression/life for homosexuals
You sould have instead made it clear that these things (especially "b") while in your personal interest are outweighed by all the other ways in which the Palestinians are oppressed. That you would prefer that Israel lose in spite of the costs to just homosexuals.
Now on democracy --- remember that ............
1) Democracy is NOT a system designed to produce good, just, wise, generous, etc. etc. decisions but instead, just the decisions that "the people" of that democracy want.
2) Don't take this the wrong way, I personally favor having a constitution to restrict what the majority can do. But the reality is that constitutions are ANTI-democratic features intended to eliminate some of the dangers of 'too much democracy".
To a large extent, the sort of politics you see in Israel is the direct result of their form of government (proportional representation with minimal threshhold for seating in the parliament). Leads to a highly fragmented political scene and one in which all the "kook" factions hold seats and ggenerally impossible to form a government coaltion without including at kleast some "kook" parties. Back to point "1' ---- if you are committed to "democracy" then that is a GOOD thing (the "kooks" have just as much of a right to vote and be represented as you, with your greater wisdom do)

Please see http://israelwarcrime.blogspot.com/ for evidence and news On Israel committing war crimes in Palestine.
"Israel claims it is attacking Palestine to defend itself? This is a joke! Israel defend itself? Does this sound like defense? Palestine doesn't even have an army, navy, or air force ---they have nothing but people throwing sticks and stones trying to defend themselves. Palestine is impoverished and a third world country compared to Israel. Israel has one of the most advanced military operations in the world. Can they not just kill Hamas if they wanted to? Does their great technology not allow this? Do they need to send in tanks, military planes, and a ground invasion against a country that doesn't even have a military? Do they need to attack UN schools where where Palestinian civilians are hiding (read more here)? Former US President, Jimmy Carter. states in his book that "Israel's 'apartheid' policies are worse than South Africa's" (read more here). Israel has always suppressed Palestine and has always wanted to attack Palestine. Palestine is a small impoverished country cut off by Israel from the rest of the world."
