Protest BART Police Murder of Oscar Grant
Wednesday, January 7, 3 pm - 8 pm
Fruitvale BART

(Alternate route if station is shut down: AC Transit lines 1 or 1R, http://tripplanner.transit.511.org/)

On Jan 1st in the early morning hours, BART police detained a young black man named Oscar Grant along with several other people at Fruitvale BART. In front of hundreds of witnesses (and captured on numerous videos) he was cooperative and in fear of his life, actually pleading with officers not to be tase or shoot him. Soon thereafter officers pushed him to the ground and began to handcuff him. One officer then stood, drew his weapon, and shot Oscar in the back at point blank range, killing him. Officers at the scene then handcuffed the dying man as his life drained from him, and spent their energy trying to confiscate witnesses videos of the incident.

A week later, BART police has given no explanation to the public. They are pleading for "patience" and trying to concoct possible excuses for what is a blatant police execution of this young man. They have not even interviewed the officer who killed Oscar. But you don't have to believe me or the news stories or the hundreds of witnesses who saw this. And you don't need to wait for the results of a bogus so-called "investigation". You can watch the video yourself, but beware, it is a graphic video. An innocent, peaceful human being is being brutally murdered. Once you see this you will not be able to forget it.

Join us at the Fruitvale BART Wednesday from 3-8 pm to demand:

1) Murder charges for Oscars killer.
2) Independent investigation of the BART police to assess the legal culpability of administrators and the other officers involved.
3) Disband the BART police department.

The last demand requires some explanation, and it is a structural one, and therefore an important one. This is not an isolated incident, not a bad apple, not something that can be fixed by removing one officer. The responsibility goes up the chain of command. All you have to do is look at the response of the department to this most egregious police murder as the BART police "investigate" themselves. We believe the BART police department is a "renegade" police force with bizarre jurisdiction that operates without effective oversight or accountability to the public. It has a history of brutality and abuse and it is redundant and uneccessary since all of its important functions can be equally served by local police departments. Its a waste of money, and a hazard to the public. Get rid of the BART police.

There should be a concerted effort to organize everyone involved in a solid coalition that can launch some mass protest on the issue. People are pissed. If people come together, the community can moblize itself against the state in a self-empowering way. Any one interested? Continue to post to help get the ball rolling. Throw out ideas and proposals.

I thought I would just drop some info about BART police in here so people can get ideas at maybe more places to protest or people to flood emails/calls too.

The first thing is BART is split into 4 Zones for the BPD, each zone contains specific stations. Zone 1 is where fruitvale is if I have read all the info correctly, apparently it has different zones for BPD then it does for the board of director districts, w/e. The BART Police Department's main headquarters and Zone 1 facility are located at 800 Madison Street, Oakland, CA 94607. This is also where the Lake Merritt BART station is located.

Second there is a public meeting of the board scheduled to meet at BART Board Room Kaiser Center 20th Street Mall, Third Floor, 344 -20th Street Oakland CA, on Thursday the 8th at 9:00 am to which the public is invited to join because they are discussing ticket price hikes. This would be a great place to start a protest. They even provide a easy to use directions pdf, http://www.bart.gov/docs/to_BART_Board.pdf

BPD Toll-free: 877.679.7000 To call any of the persons or sections below, call this toll-free number and press the last four digits of the phone number you wish to reach.

BPD Chief of Police: Gary Gee 510.464.7022, ggee [at] bart.gov
BPD Internal Affairs: Sergeant David Chlebowski 510.464.7029, dchlebo [at] bart.gov

PATROL BUREAU
BPD Patrol Commander: William (Travis) Gibson 510.464.7066, wgibson [at] bart.gov
BPD Zones 1 and 3 Days: Lieutenant William Schultz 510.464.7080, wschult [at] bart.gov
BPD Zones 1 and 3 Evening: Lieutenant Gary Cagaanan 510.464.7031, gcagaan [at] bart.gov
BPD Zones 1 and 3 Evening: Lieutenant Kevin Franklin 510.464.7772, kfrankl [at] bart.gov

Carole Ward Allen is the District 4 BART Director which is where fruitvale ends up. Because she is a elected official her information is posted on the BART website and is here http://www.bart.gov/docs/ward_allen.pdf she does not have an e-mail or office phone number listed on the BART website.

Unfortunately, or unconstitutionally, it's not unheard of for BART to shut down a station during a protest. See for example http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/11/06/18549304.php

Alternate route from Lake Merritt BART to Fruitvale BART:
Board AC Transit line 1 or 1R bus at SW corner of 11th St & Madison St.
Offboard at SE corner of International Blvd & 34th Ave.

Alternate route from San Leandro BART to Fruitvale BART:
Board AC Transit line 1 bus at San Leandro BART station.
Offboard at NW corner of International Blvd & 34th Ave.
