The human thing to do is care enough to not let them take your neighbors, like Karina did by stepping forward to record the arrest. I hope I am that strong next time I see a police stop. Cell phone camera, camcorder, disposable, whatever: if we all recorded every police stop we saw, that would help, but when they kill there are no words or courts that can make it alright. We would be recording so we knew the truth and so the cops knew we were watching. Video tape can't convict a cop, just ask Rodney King, but we can raise the costs when they commit their atrocities. The police were under a huge amount of stress from the angry mob made apparent by your video. Why were so many people approaching the Police, yelling and screaming at them? Does that mean some one deserved to get shot? No but it's sure easy to see how some thing could have gone wrong. I don't see how this could be called murder, more of an accidental death under a high pressure situation. The police officer who used the fire arm should be prosecuted for sure though for stupidity.

jason, is it an 'angry mob' because they're young black and brown people? violent police activity creates chaos and confusion (and righteous rage for that matter). it looked to me like people we're trying to see what was happening, look out for their brothers, create some kind of check on a police system that brutalizes unchecked, with police officers that commit violent racist acts every day. i was proud to see people trying to see what was happening, since so many of us shy away from police power. check that shit.

There stories have changed a few times since the shooting took place. First they were happy that there was no video footage from the BART cameras then personal videos were released and now they have to stop all communication about the situation. The officer clearly shoots the man in the back in the video. Maybe he was confused and didn't know he had a gun in his hand but that's an accident that will cost BART $25 Million dollars.

I am surprised people didn't get more upset. Where are our Greek-like riots and burning cop cars?
I can't believe it is illegal to stop the police from making such horrible mistakes!

Cops often hurt people under high stress situations, because they are scared. That is why they shouldn't have those weapons. They are emotional human beings after all.

I'm a greek riot from athens so excuse my funny english. I's about to give u people an advice. Organize yourselves, inform people somehow, make everyone feel the danger from the police, make things happening.
Use speech and fire, start attacking the police everywhere. If there is any fire inside the people of your community, it will make it explode.

Open fire is not a good advice, it just incite to violence. Parents might care of what their young boys and girls are doing at the street. If you see the video, police officers were under pressure with these men fighting in front of them, could you do something right in that conditions? Think a little bit.

The BART Officer’s name is: Johannes Mehserle.

A friend of Grant’s [the man killed by BART cops] who was with him on the crowded Oakland train station platform at the time of the shooting said Grant pleaded with officers not to harm him.

“Oscar yelled, ‘You shot me! I got a four-year-old daughter,”‘ said Fernando Anicete. “Oscar was telling us to calm down and we did. We weren’t looking for any trouble.”

What has been going on in greece as well as oakland has deeply saddened me as it should everyone. Police have been abusing power for as long as they have been around. These recent deaths in greece as well as in oakland should remind us that we need to show the police they aren't that powerful. We should treat them like they treat us. We need to get angry and show them this isn't ok. I hope that everyone shows support at demonstrations for this.

This was a unfortunate accident that could have been avoided had the officer not gone for his taser/gun in a situation that did not pose a threat. People who are out in the street vandalizing the city of Oakland in protest of the shooting should realize that this is not the way to handle this situation. This officer was sick to pull his gun out. shoot the young man like a deer. Who the hell he thank he is. The other bart officers should arrest him or oakland police. It is true that there are some police officers that try to do the right thing and know how to address and approach situations. But do not give the excuse that because being under pressure it's okay to shoot an individual in the back while he's face down on the ground with his hands in hand cuffed behind his back, and say "IT WAS AN ACCIDENT". Now someone's life is lost the family of Oscar Grant is hurting, and his baby is left with out a father. THERE IS NO WAY IT CAN BE MADE RIGHT.

I can only say that I pray that nothing like this should ever happen to one of my children. In the bible it says "AN EYE FOR AN EYE" "A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH" "AND A LIFE FOR A LIFE". That officer who took that young man's life should pay with his life. And that would be closure for me if something like that would ever happen to one of mine.

The other question is why did the other officers try to cover it up by trying to take the camera from Ms. Vargas? Are they also killers? From what I saw not one officer made an attempt to correct this something is wrong very wrong. Also that officer's face should be all over the news paper, media, and the internet and the others who were involved and let justice take its course. PEOPLE WAKE UP.

He was WAY too young to die. Astrologically- THAT was The Day his ticket was going to be punched.
But man- this kind of stuff has been going on for TOO LONG- I have been a victim of cop abuse because of doing absolutely NOTHING- while my rights were being violated by some jerk- it seems like to cops grab the one that presents less of a danger much too often.
It usually winds up getting swept under the rug without so much as an article in the paper or online- I have witnessed it first hand when they blew a guy away in our backyard in a tree house- NOT ONE ARTICLE ANYWHERE.
WHY?
Because NOBODY HAD IT ON FILM.
They lied and swept it under the rug- it was a blip on the radar- except in the minds of those that witnessed the event.

The same day to other young black men were shot by police one was suspected of stealing a car he's now in hospital with a bullet in his liver. Another was shot in New Orleans 14 times and twelve of those entered through his back. He was shot by 7 undercover policemen. They were not investing him he was on his way to his families home. The official story is that he fired on them first. This however does not make sense as he has no police record and no way of identifying them as police. Take to the streets and stop trying to act like Greece make your own revolution!

man suspected of theft was in his parents driveway the car belonged to the parents. Suspected case of racial profiling. Man was also complyingwith police requests when his mother who was trying to explain the situation to the pigs was thrown against the garage door. The victim then demanded to know what the cop was doing at which point he was shot. Links between all three cases 1. All early 20's 2.Black 3.killed by cops 4.all innocent 5.all on new years day. Not only was this police killing one of at least three around the country in the first few hours of 2009 (Adolph Grimes in New Orleans, Miles Murphy in Seattle), but it's the tip of an iceberg that's much bigger than most people - even many activists - realize. Here is a link to the Department of "Justice" website that lists "Justifiable homicides" by police each year (and their definition for what is "justifiable" is "the killing of a felon by a law enforcement officer in the line of duty", so apparently the DoJ thinks once a person is convicted of a felony they are subject to being killed "justifiably" at any time for the rest of their life):

Take the decade of the 1990s: they list 3,876 such cases. Meanwhile, in the same decade we documented over 2,000 cases of homicides by police or negligent jail personnel, and in maybe only half of them could police contort the facts to claim the homicide was "justifiable". So a rough estimate is that if the DoJ listed "unjustifiable" homicides by police (and we'll likely never know which is which - they only give numbers, not names/dates/locations), there'd be maybe twice that number in total - or around 8,000, and that works out to over TWO PER DAY!
