Film showing: The Barefoot Doctors of Rural China - this award-winning 1975 short film documents the unprecedented "barefoot doctor" movement in Mao's China. By putting priority on the needs of the people, and relying on them, a new system of healthcare was created, combining peasant paramedics with trained doctors, integrating Western and indigenous medicine, with a focus on preventive care and education. Basic health care was provided to millions of poor people in China for the first time in history. Discussion of the film will follow.
