Iraq Vets Street Theater Occupies Downtown SF

by Jeff Paterson, Courage to Resist (jeff [at] paterson.net)
IVAW (Iraq Veterans Against the War) performed "Operation First Casualty" throughout downtown San Francisco on Black Friday, interrupting shoppers' routines with a graphic display of the action that they were missing by not being in Iraq. Volunteer "civilians" were detained, cuffed and hooded by the Iraq vets in a graphic reenactment of the US military's occupation of Iraq. Several volunteers were water-boarded. Volunteers pretended to be Iraq citizens suffering under the occupation of U.S. forces.

i cry for the mothers of those iraq men and women. I cry for the children who watch their parents treated that way. The worst thing is Almost all of those citizens are INNOCENT. We should all cry for the Un fair treatment of the iraqs. Please Know not all of us think the war is a good thing. I CRY.

This is great. I wish this would happen all over the country, all the time. People need to see this.

I am currently reading about a young American who has left the US Army in protest about what he has seen happening in Iraq. Of course he is a deserter. I think that these people are very brave to go public with their protest. I hope they are heard and respected for what they are doing.

This made me cry......Please stop the war.......Please do not stop making me feel

All the people that think this is some kind of "great" reenactment....I can almost guarantee that none of you have served and that none of you have ever been outside your comfortable little bubble that you live in and it DISGUSTS me that you live in this country. This "reenactment" is completely absurd and one sided. Let's do a reenactment of the terrorist attack on American soil shall we?? Let's reenact all the thousands of people that died on our land and live through that again?? Since you all seem to forget that little detail. Let's also do a reenactment of the terrorist that live in Iraq and use their own Women and Children (some under the age of 6) to lure our military members close to them all the while strapped with explosives and bombs?? People who believe this kind of bull $%#@ are not educated and I wouldn't claim you as true Americans. What part of WAR don't you people get. Maybe we should all live in hippie land and not do anything about the entities that threaten our lands?? Think about it.....

I bet "Actual Veteran" is a 400-pound hambeast "armchair soldier". Another brainless, beer-fed, dumbass "patriot" who will believe anything the government tells him as long as the government is white and republican.

You sicken me.

as x military i have to say congrats to all those veterns that participated in this event... if anyone knows just how few rights we have and how easy the gov can mess with those who have given up their rights to serve our country.... you all put allot on the line to speak your voice and I thank you for exspressing our first ammendment rights, what little we have left of them..... you are the true honorable americans that this country needs more of... information and truth is power and thankyou for given some to the commonwealth. good speed to you all.

Actual Veteran seems to be the one living in a bubble. He (or she) is unwilling to accept the possibility that there ARE Iraq vets who served in combat, yet believe this war is unjust.
Actual Veteran also seems unwilling to admit that a person can be a patiotic American, yet be opposed to specific policies or actions carried out by the U.S. government.

Blind loyalty is the most dangerous kind of loyalty, Actual Veteran. It's what empowered Hitler. I'm sure that if you think about it for a minute, you can come up with some scenarios where even you would feel compelled to protest against your government.

No links have been shown between Saddam's regime & 9/11. That is a fact.
No weapons of mass destruction have ever been discovered. That is a fact.
About 3000 U.S. civillians died on 9/11, but THIRTY times that number have died in Iraq (http://www.iraqbodycount.org/) That is a fact.
The war in Iraq was launched under a lot of dubious propaganda & media manipulation by the Bush administration. Intelligence findings were cherry-picked, dissenting opinions were silenced, journalists were bribed to write propagandist editorials in support of the war. All these are facts.
A LOT of patriotic Americans believe that we were tricked into supporting a war for which there was no real justification, and that the Bush administration, by violating the Geneva Conventions, committed war crimes.
I do not want another 9/11 attack to happen, but I am not so afraid of terrorists that I'm willing to sacrifice those high ideals that are the heart of American patriotism just to keep my ass covered.
I respect your service to our country, but you are wrong to question the patriotism of others who served our country, yet protest what the believe is a criminal war.
As soon as I read that, or hear that, someone still thinks there is a connection (besides the one our intervention has created), I immediately tune out because I know their emotions have taken over and they cannot reasonably assess the facts that are out there.

The only way to stop iraq and indeed another needless war in Iran is to expose and arrest the perputratoras of 9/11. Bush, Cheney, Rice and Rumfeld for staters.

This kind of display is what the American people need to see up close and personal. Otherwise the war seems a world away and never really enters into their own little portion of the world unless they loose a loved one to war. They can go about their daily routine and not have to face what we have done to the Iraqi people....not at all the same as the veterans have to do.

I want to know what DISGUSTS someone about political dissent. What is DISGUSTING about real veterans acting out what they lived through and witnessed while in Iraq. It is important for all of us on either side to be open-minded, but as soon as someone tells me I am disgusting and shouldn't be a part of this country because i look at the facts rather than propaganda, I tend to tune them out.
