SANTA BARBARA -- A portion of the 101 Freeway is closed in both directions in downtown Santa Barbara after a masked gunman was spotted on a freeway overpass.
Witnesses say the gunman, wearing brown fatigues and a black ski mask, was spotted waving a gun around on the La Cumbre overpass around 7:10 a.m. Monday.
Sergeant Lorenzo Duarte with the Santa Barbara Police Department says the man is armed with a handgun and is waving an American flag. Some witnesses say the man is shouting anti-Obama slogans.
The freeway was shut down in both directions at La Cumbre as a precaution and traffic is being diverted through downtown Santa Barbara. The California Highway Patrol reports the freeway closure has caused a massive traffic backup throughout the area. The roadway will remain closed until further notice, according to the CHP.
Dozens of police officers, including members of the Santa Barbara SWAT team, have surrounded the area and are attempting to begin negotiations with the gunman, officials said.
The man's motive was not immediately known, although he may be suicidal.
No shots have been fired.

At 7:10am this morning I saw two young men loitering on the La Cumbre overpass. One was dressed in camouflage and the other in shorts and a t-shirt. They looked like they were arguing and the the camouflage guy walked to the middle of the overpass and was fiddling with something on the bridge wall.

I started to head to work at ucsb this morning and luckily I caught the tail end of a traffic report so I didn't get on the freeway. I attempted to get to Foothill, but every road up there past about Santa Barbara st. was a parking lot...alamar, mission, etc. I just turned around and went home.
If you can just stay home until they get the situation under control, do it. I heard people saying on the radio that they moved about 1/4 mile in an hour on the freeway.

I wish I'd seen this report. I took foothill towards goleta, which was mostly clear. But back into SB was a horrific queue, so I guess I cannot return home later today. I hope this gunman issue is resolved soon. My sympathies go to everyone still stuck in the gridlock.

shows the traffic from Patterson on 101 looking toward Santa Barbara... a horrible jam, and very little oncoming traffic from Santa Barbara.

It's a half-wit with a flag and a gun, people. Let's question the second amendment instead of making this another election issue.
Leave it to the media to spin an idiot's cry for attention into something political.
