Would you like to do something of direct, clear benefit to the citizens of Iraq?
In conjunction with the Alalusi Foundation, a non-profit organization that provide humanitarian aid to people in many parts of the world, the Iraq Action Group and Student Health Professionals for Social Responsibility at UCSF are working to organize an enormous shipment of medical supplies that will be sent directly to a number of hospitals in Iraq. These supplies, useful for operating rooms, intensive care units and emergency departments, and worth hundreds of thousand of dollars, were donated by various local sources, and our job is to repack them in a way that they can clear customs into Iraq and be useful to the healthcare facilities in Baghdad and other cities.
We have already started this process and now want to gear up to complete the task. At this point, we estimate it will take about 50 people two more days to complete the work.
So – please mark your calendars for Saturday, November 15th from 9-5 at the Alalusi Foundation warehouse in Hayward. We encourage all of you to invite your friends – we discovered on the first day that anyone can be of help (although medical knowledge is a plus). We also found that it is extremely useful to have some people with respiratory, operating room, or intensive care backgrounds.
We do need to know how many people are coming so that arrangements can be made for the expected turnout, so please RSVP by email to Dan Lowenstein at lowenstein [at] medsch.ucsf.edu.
Peace,
Mylo Schaaf, M.D. and Dan Lowenstein, M.D.
