Works on Paper Exhibits Provocative Juxtapositions of Aesthetic Values
The exhibition “Surface & Substance” at the San Francisco Studio School Gallery
displays work in a variety of media exploring the potentials, similarities and dissimilarities in two-dimensional art engaging a common substrate -- paper. Collage, drawing, printmaking and painting on paper by both East and West Coast artists are presented. The exhibition is a study in contrasts from the highly reductive work of John Zurier to Sandy Walker’s large-scale brush drawings; Seiko Tachibana’s modular wall installation to Hearne Pardee’s collages. Work by Chuck O’Connor, Michalene Parker, Gina Werfel, Laura Harden and Lon Clark explore qualities of material, structure and visual language creating references to shared understanding and individual confrontations with contemporary aesthetics. The show offers a challenging and diverse view of physical materiality and visual metaphor.
Opening Reception, November 6, 2008, 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
Show runs from November 6, 2008 through January 29, 2009.
Gallery hours are Tuesday–Friday: 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Saturday by appointment only.
