During the Martial Law days under Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, San Francisco was the center of a broad, international anti-martial law movementand the site of regular protests against the daily slayings and enforced disappearances of those who dared challenge the tyranny of the U.S.-backed Marcos regime.
36 years later, we are witnessing once again hundreds of abductions and extra-judicial killings of social justice advocates, journalists and church leaders who are speaking out against the corruption and repression of the U.S.-backed Arroyo administration.
On the 36th anniversary of the Declaration of Martial Law,
the Filipino community of San Francisco will once again raise its voice in prayer and protest in remembrance of the martyrs of Martial Law and of the thousands of current victims of human rights violations in our homeland.
