Join us on September 20th outside of the Del Mar as we picket Shakespeare in Santa Cruz! Why protest Shakespeare plays you ask? Simple. Shakespeare is an "upstart crow," as stated by Robert Greene in the supremely influential pamphlet entitled 'Groats-vvorth of Witte' (citation: ww.william-shakespeare.org.uk/william-shakespeare-upstart-crow.htm). Why would such an esteemed town as Santa Cruz lay host a playwright who is compared to a rather lowly winged bird? That's precisely the question we'll be asking Lorde Mayor Ryan Coonerty III as he makes his morning ascent into the seedy halls of the local governance.
Fellow citizens of the beach front community, I have this to implore you; Join us for a most righteous picketing on September 20th as we voice our complaints to Sir Ryan Coonerty III. His lowness has stood complacent as our fair city continues the deplorable tradition of letting an - I'll say it again - "upstart crow" into the local vicinity. (Again, not to flog the argument, but herein lies the link once more: ww.william-shakespeare.org.uk/william-shakespeare-upstart-crow.htm.) Because our supposedly "beloved" mayor has allowed this lowly playwright to continually sully the reputation of Santa Cruz, we the citizens must take action! We must gather outside the establishment known as the Del Mar Theatre and demand that Coonerty no longer allow Shakespeare to enter into the township and we must implore the theatre's management to no longer play this atrocious individual's horrid films. (The "upstart['s]" making more! Look: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000636/)
So please show up, be you man, woman, or peasant. We must stop this good-for-nothing from having any influence upon the arts in our beloved community. Oh yes, and gin will be served (to all of those of age and with seven pence to spare). (NOTE: Prices for gin will vary, as the gin itself will not be served at the protest site, but rather at the honourable proprietary shop known as "The Grog Shop." FURTHER NOTE: Gin may or may not be stocked.)
