At approx. 2pm PST, an FBI agent posing as neighbor knocked at the door of a home in Oceanside CA, lured a Santa Cruz resident from his mother's house, and arrested him. The only known charge at this point is felony perjury. He is being held on $100,000 bond. The person arrested is a resident of the house on Riverside Ave. in Santa Cruz that has been raided twice in the past 6 months.
After arresting the person, the FBI attempted to question his mother and friend, unsuccessfully. The FBI told the arrestees mother he is being transferred to the Vista jail, and will be extradited to Santa Cruz Tuesday.
It is not known if the arrestees vegan diet is being accommodated, but as a pre-emptive move they are asking people to call the jail:

Im confused, is there any information that could be revealed about where these charges could of appeared from? Was Nathan Subpoenaed to a grand jury? From my understanding you can only be charged with perjury after making a sworn oath in a court of law and then having been proved to be lying after making an allegedly false statement or whatever. I hope he's doing alright.
One explanation would be a name change to that of a step-father causing legal confusion. However this is a very weak reason to hold a person. Possibly, this is only a FBI tactic to hold this person closer to Santa Cruz.
A lot of people read this. It hit Google news for local alerts today. Maybe some background and an explanation of who this guy is and what he's supposedly done or not done, might help garner some additional support that you didn't know was out there.....the myspace page doesn't cut it btw.

First, Only the DA can drop or add charges. Second, you can call the jail all you want. You will get the same answer everytime. REMEMBER only the District Attorney of the issuing case can drop charges or in some cases the arresting agency.

Yeah, lawyers are expensive, especially when you're still recovering financially from having everything in your house stolen by the FBI, twice. Donations accepted at http://www.myspace.com/support_nathan

According to the Mercury News, Nathan plead Not Guilty today. The judge kept his bail at an insane $100,000, while the average bail for a Felony DMV perjury is less than $10,000. According to the Mercury News, he is scheduled to reappear in court on Sept. 12 to confirm a preliminary hearing.

I'm just wondering why there is such a feeling of panic by the people who have been posting the messages about supporting nathan, going to his hearings, etc. As a person who has been arrested for various political causes, and who's dealt with the legal system in that respect, I see the messages put on this site as well as the myspace page as extraordinarily defensive. it makes him seem guiltier than you suggest he is.
He's only been arrested for perjury, of which he is innocent until proven guilty. IF the authorities decide to charge him with terrorism based on the attacks on UCSC professors then i think it warrants some panic and sentences that end in 3 exclamation points and are written in all caps. for now, if his friends want to show up at court to watch his indictment, go for it, but don't blow it up into something so much bigger than it is at this moment.

That, according to Indybay and its comments section, apparently not one student or protester in the history of Santa Cruz has apparently ever been arrested for a legitimate and fair reason.
I'm not even necessarily referring to this specific case...just that every time a student gets arrested in town for anything, especially protest-related, this site gets into an uproar about how the person must be defended against unfair and potentially illegal practices by authorities. I can assure you, the police don't "conspire" against you people half as much as you think they do. I can also assure you that plenty of student protesters in Santa Cruz are arrested and jailed for perfectly legitimate reasons. It's not like every student in the town who attends a protest decides to keep everything perfectly peaceful and and nice, and then the police show up and start pressing false charges against random kids. If he's guilty of any kind of involvement with the firebombings, or the attacks on the animal researchers, he damn well deserves some prison time, and if he did what they say he did in regards to this perjury charge, they should damn well hold on to him (as is legally acceptable).

Judge Jeff Almquist kept Knoerl's bail at $100,000.
The standard bail for a perjury charge is $5,000. I read about this in the Sentinel and I have to say this is pretty strange.
There's the involvement of the FBI on a minor charge. There's the bail kept at 20 times the average. I agree with his lawyer's quote in a recent article: "I believe that there are a lot of targetings of people for ideology and philosophy."

The Riverside house was searched by the FBI after the firebombings, though there was no known connection between the house and the crime...
"Amendment IV - The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
Nathan's jail is ... very large for his crime.
"Amendment VIII - Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. "

bail. not jail.
didnt he just have a Court date? anymore information you can give us?
According to the Sentinel, he was released on his own recognizance today. Next court date is September 30. I can't believe the DA is taking this to trial, on the accusation that he used his stepfather's name, which he has been using since he was five years old, on an ID application.

He's charged with perjury for checking the 'NO' box on a CA state ID card application that says, Have you ever applied for a government ID in another name. He has a CA state driver's license in another name. That's what they call perjury in the business. He also had in his possession a UCSC student ID with the name Matt Matthews on it. He'll get his day in court to explain all this of course, but its not looking good.

Serious question: is this dude a rock or a tree?
Did he have court today? How did that go? Is there a trial date set yet? Keep us updated
My only point is that by purchasing eye-care related products you may or may not be directly contributing to laboratory testing on animals. I'm not implying that Nathan had anything to do with what went on up at the university or that he purchased glasses from a company that engages in laboratory testing. What I would like to know is at what point does being "radical" stop (general question for anyone reading this)? Would it make sense to first stop wearing glasses (this question is NOT necessarily directed at Nathan)? What about Jainism?!
"Nonviolence includes vegetarianism. Jains are expected to be non-violent in thought, word, and deed, both toward humans and toward all other living beings, including their own selves. Jain monks and nuns walk barefoot and sweep the ground in front of them to avoid killing insects or other tiny beings. Even though all life is considered sacred by the Jains, human life is deemed the highest form of life. For this reason, it is considered vital never to harm or upset any person."

This entire situation is a total nightmare and as someone who has served time, I would not wish it upon anyone. It's just frustrating to see this sort of stuff happen for everyone involved.

Glasses. If you don't wear them now you will when you are 40+. And probably everyone should be wearing sunglasses because of radiation from the sun, oh, and don't forget the effect of outdoor light on the retina. So tell us where the reputable labs are or disreputable and publicize that.
Nathan Pope is scheduled to go to trial on the perjury charge Dec. 15, says the Sentinel

A Cabrillo College student accused of perjury pleaded guilty Thursday to a lesser charge, was sentenced to the jail time already served and placed on probation for two years.
Nathan Knoerl, also known as Nathan Pope, was arrested in Southern California in August after a state Department of Motor Vehicles investigator found evidence the man had checked the wrong box on a California Department of Motor Vehicles form in January 2007.
Knoerl was charged with perjury, which carries a two- to four-year prison sentence, and was set to go to trial Monday. However, during a trial confirmation hearing Thursday morning, the District Attorney's Office reduced the charge to providing false information to the DMV, a misdemeanor, and Knoerl pleaded guilty, according to prosecutor Barbara Rizzieri.
"It's consistent with the other cases of people similarly charged in our county," Rizzieri said, explaining the reduced charge.
The perjury charge against Knoerl surfaced during the probe of the violent animal rights protests in Santa Cruz and was pursued by a DMV inspector.
Knoerl has lived in a Riverside Avenue house that was twice raided during the ongoing investigation into attacks. No arrests have been made in the February home invasion attack and July fire bombings that targeted three UC Santa Cruz researchers.
