This monthly meeting of "Being John Brown" will focus on Racism in Education and Schooling. We'll present workshops and exercises designed to confront privilege and racism; we'll also hear from contributors to the recently published book The Cost of Privilege (http://www.costofprivilege.com/).
About the group:
John Brown opposed slavery with militant resistance. Learning from this example, we discuss antiracism in our own lives, work, and communities. We share strategies for confronting racism and the behaviors and institutions that allow it to continue to derail our movements and divide our communities. I think that to build genuine solidarity, white people can and should discuss race and racism amongst white people--honestly and often. What do you think?
All are welcome, but the discussion will be focused on the experiences of white-skinned people. Bring a book to suggest, a film to share, and a readiness to confront the racism within and in all the places we go.
