ATHENS (Reuters) - Two boats carrying activists from 17 countries will leave the Mediterranean island of Cyprus next week bound for Gaza in a bid to break an Israeli blockade of the Palestinian territory, organizers said on Tuesday.
The Free Gaza Movement hopes the boats, due to depart on August 5 with around 40 people onboard, will draw attention to the plight of 1.4 million Palestinians suffering shortages of everything from fuel to food since an Israeli crackdown.
Israel pulled its troops and settlers out of Gaza in 2005 but has tightened security restrictions on the territory since the militant Islamic movement Hamas seized control there a year ago from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' security forces.
"We want to open Gaza to unrestricted international access," organizer Paul Larudee told a news conference in Athens.
The Free Gaza Movement's organizers said they had not notified Israeli authorities of their plan and were prepared for resistance or even sabotage from them.

There is an assumption beiong made that Israel will stop the ships, thereby confirming that they are besieging Gaza. But I have seen some reports that Israel is considering all options and the organizers of this thing need to do that too. It's a "rule of war" never to base you plans upon your estimation of the enemy's intentions but upon his capabilities.
What if Israel simply lets the ships through thereeby PROVING that they are not "besieging" Gaza? After all, Israel does not surround Gaza. The fact that the only ECONOMIC means to supply Gaza is thorugh Israel via Israeli port facilities and the only economic route for people in and out through Israel (though moving people being cheaper than goods, via Egypt not toally impractical) -- these things do not imply a RIGHT to transit throuhg Israel.
See what I am getting at? The demand that Israel allow supplies in THROUGH ISRAEL and people in and out THROUGH Israel become unjustifed if they allow you access to Gaza small ports and beaches. Though heaven help the Gazans if that's what they have to depend upon. Are you prepared to take on the task of supplying Gaza this way?
