Future visioning group Transition Santa Cruz will be showing the timely film "A Crude Awakening," a film that addresses the many questions people have about gasoline prices and our future energy supply in a particularly thoughtful way. "A Crude Awakening" features well-edited interview excerpts with energy experts from many countries, as well as vintage footage from early oil company promo films and past and present scenes of former oil boomtowns.
After the film, there will be refreshments and an opportunity to hear how 35 cities in England and elsewhere have begun to respond to the challenges of the end of cheap energy by launching "Transition Initiatives." These are grassroots movements that take as one of their premises that a lower-energy, post-fossil-fueled future could be an improvement on the present, if well-planned. Transition Santa Cruz is the name adopted by a group of local community organizers launching Santa Cruz' own Transition Initiative.
