California Hotel Unlawful Eviction Update
On July 14 (Bastille Day), the tenants of the California Hotel and their supporters held a 6pm rally & protest to demonstrate against the unlawful attempts to evict the long-time tenants out of their housing!
CaHon Associates and Oakland Community Housing, Inc., told the tenants (over 70 of them) that they wanted them out of their housing units by July 15 after threatening to shut off the gas, water and electricity at the California Hotel. The tenants refused to comply with the unlawful demands of the slumlords operating the California Hotel, decided to stay in their housing and responded with a $2.5 million lawsuit against the Oakland Community Housing, Inc., the John Stewart Company, CaHon Associates, Inc., Charles Folwkes, Greg Hyson, and Laura Sanborn!

California Hotel Unlawful Eviction Update
July 15, 2008
Oakland -- George Stringer a longtime tenant of the California Hotel, was born in Monroe, Louisiana, was raised in Oakland, CA., and has resided at the California Hotel for over 3 years, after being the manager of the Exodus House in Oakland.
On July 15, at around 7:30 pm George Stringer stated that The John Stewart Company packed up and moved out today, shut down the front desk and left by around 5-6pm.
"The John Stewart Company packed up to go, and left behind a security guard to keep an eye on the place, and the rest of us that are holding out are doing just fine, so far," said Stringer. "These people tried to force us out as though we do not have any rights as tenants in Oakland or California, and we're staying as long as we can. The rents are to high for us to try and move anywhere else at this point, and we are better off staying put and exerting are rights as tenants."
George Stringer resides in a single room (SRO) that includes a bathroom, and shares a kitchen with others on the floor he resides on at the California Hotel. He is being charged $400 a month in rent to reside at the California Hotel, and is one among 72 other tenants that have decided to stay put and have held out against the landlords unlawful order to get out before the July 15 deadline.
George Stringer wants people in the community to keep an eye on whats happening with the tenants at the California Hotel, in case the owners (Oakland Community Housing, Inc.), try to pull another fast one and force the tenants out of their housing somehow.
Further below is a list of the tenants that have sued to keep their housing, and are the ones that have managed to get a Judge to grant them a TRO to stop the landlords from turning off their gas, water and electricity at the California Hotel. The tenants are being represented by John Murcko of Oakland and Stephen Perelson of Mill Valley California.

yea cali sure is KRAP with its poorly planned older cities. not nearly enough apartments for low-incum folks or even couples just starting oudt. so-called gentified areas are tearing down old buildings, only to make luxury condos nearly expensive as houses. now they gotta make matters worse by evicting down and outers from cut-rate motels all over the northern part of the state. it's incomprehensible to accept only temporary guests, what with the higher theft/vandalism rate by such "superior" clientele, and these places generally losing money in the coldseasons due to high vacancy rates. how much is a small studio with no proper kitchen, no mailbox, no security, no storage, and no privacy worth anyway??? it's a rotten trend deliberately construed to street people to knock 'em into shape--hence the ILLEGAL lackof proper notice-to-vacate--and will actually cost millions in the long run in crime, disease, aesthetics, and patriotism. t.b. might well make a comeback as unkempt homeless people frequent restaurants. there's NO EXCUSE in a rich country that wastes billions each year saving animals and plants, while its citizens go to hell.
In Japan you can find very small, safe sleeping quarters like horse stalls. Not the best, but no ones outside contaminating public pks with feces. We feel they shud build MORE motels for The HOMElESS to get around buildx kodes that have size limitations.
