A play written as a novel in 1948 by San Francisco native Kathryn Forbes (1908-1966) made into a play by John Van Druten, and a movie directed by George Stevens which was nominated for a 1949 Academy Award in several categories and won the 1949 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress Ellen Corby
This drama is about the life of Katherine Forbes, a daughter of Norwegian immigrant working class community of San Francisco in 1910. (Note: Today's San Francisco Women's Building was once owned by the Sons of Norway.) Union members Papa, and the uncles cope with some hard times.
