by Crystal Math
This past Tuesday, June 10, Berkeley residents & activists gathered against UC Berkeley's plan to pulverize the Bevatron structure, which would spread nuclear dust onto the doorsteps of thousands.

UC Berkeley Lab Plans To Demolish Bevatron TENS OF THOUSANDS OF TONS OF RADIOACTIVE DEBRIS TO BE HAULED THROUGH STREETS OF BERKELEY **Tuesday June 10, 7pm: Berkeley residents and activists gathered at Berkeley City Hall to speak against the University's plans to demolish, and haul away, the Bevatron and its contents -- of which include asbestos, lead, mercury, PCBs, and chlorinated VOCs -- during the month of June.** Some of the radioactive materials include Cobalt 60, Cesium 137, and Europium 154. Radioactive energy form Cobalt 60 can be 59 times greater in intensity than that of an ordinary X-ray. These radioactive, hazardous wastes WILL BE hauled by thousands of heavily loaded UNCOVERED trucks down Hearst Avenue to Oxford Avenue, south on Oxford to University Ave to I-80. The City of Berkeley is a Nuclear-Free Zone! An alternative to the demolition -- and removal -- would be to allow the Bevatron and its contamination to remain onsite in relative containment. Onsite containment will allow the radioactivity to decay in place and not be hauled away to other communities. **WHAT YOU CAN DO: Join us again on Tuesday June 24 at 7pm at Berkeley City Hall located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Way and Allston Way (just two blocks from downtown Berkeley BART) to rally and speak out against the demolition of the Bevatron. Stop the UC from demolishing this community! Stop the demolition of the Bevatron!!**

The handful of activists that showed up were still able to reach a wide crowd of Berkeley residents and passersby.

Concerned Citizens,

Another amazingly irresponsible blunder by the University of California at Berkeley and City of Berkeley representatives in not stopping nuclear waste other toxic materials from poisoning our community. Who is in Charge and how can we fire them?

Cobalt 60 is also used in radiation therapy to treat cancer, so there are hospitals within the City of Berkeley containing this dangerous chemical. X-rays are dangerous too. They can cause cancer if you are not careful. Ban hospitals! Ban all radiation within the City of Berkeley! Ban dangerous radiation, including radon, carbon 14, and cosmic rays!
