Salman Rushdie is one of the world literature’s leading voices.
A British-Indian essayist and novelist, his award-winning works include Midnight’s Children, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Shalimar the Clown, and The Satanic Verses, which provoked Ayatollah Khomeini’s fatwa against his life, forcing him to spend a decade underground. Now he is speaking out against Islamic extremism, as well as lecturing as the author who can tell stories that span the East and the West better than anyone writing today.
In The Enchantress of Florence, he brings together two seemingly different cities—Akbar the Great’s hedonistic Mughal capital and the equally sensual city of Renaissance Florence, where Niccolò Machiavelli takes a starring role. Rushdie's novel is a reflection on war and politics, gender and society, fantasy and rumor, individuality and public life, and how the brutal past still influences our present world.
THIS IS A TICKETED EVENT hosted by Capitola Book Café and held at Rio Theatre (1205 Soquel Avenue, Santa Cruz).
With purchase of one copy of The Enchantress of Florence, up to two event tickets can be purchased at the reduced price of $12.00 each. Event tickets without book purchase are $30.00 each.
