UCSC Inauguration or fenced in Coronation?
The fences are going up all around East Field at UCSC in order to restore the meadow. We are sure the gophers appreciate the interruption of their view of the festivities for the Inauguration tomorrow. Our bovine comrades have been moved to a different pasture as well, even though their manure would certainly help the fallow meadow. But our gopher sources have let us in on what a waste of resources this is.
But we will not be moved! Let's let the UC Executives know that UC must end poverty wages!
Perhaps the 24-hour guards—believe it or not, they call themselves the California Panthers —and multiple police units are protecting the circus rings where the UC Executives can juggle the $8-9 million to be spent on the UC President's mansion. Meanwhile UCOP is continuing to offer nothing at the bargaining table besides keeping poverty wages at UC.
10AM - Oakes College, Upper Field Snake March
12PM (through the afternoon) - Rally at Bay Tree Plaza and March
Rally & Picket @ Base of Campus all Afternoon
Grad students, let's support our fellow workers this Friday! Wear your green! Tell your colleagues to come on down and demonstrate their continued solidarity for UC workers.

Please see the attached statement from Blumenthal. Good work on eliciting some movement from him in support of our demands! This is more than most Chancellor's have done....
This came from pressure by the die-hard picketers who've been out there all week. Stay strong and see you tomorrow!

Statement of Chancellor George Blumenthal Regarding UC/AFSCME Negotiations
It is my understanding that the University of California Office of the President and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, with the assistance of state mediators, are in negotiations over a new contract for the Patient Care Technical and Service bargaining units. I support the objective of reaching agreement on a fair and equitable contract for our employees who perform duties that are critical to the mission of the University.
I also support improving the wages of our lowest paid workers. Last year I authorized an increase to the campus minimum staff salary to $25,000 a year and I funded equity increases for those making between $25,000 and $35,000. This year I have authorized special campus increases for food service workers and grounds workers. These increases have been offered to AFSCME at the system-wide bargaining table.
I have asked the Office of the President to make every effort to reach agreement with AFSCME as soon as possible. In the meantime, I am hopeful we will end this academic year with mutual respect and consideration for one another.

Just wanted to let you know that the fence in the picture has been there for some time... the whole year I think. Not everything is about you but go ahead and keep believing it is.
Yes, the fence pictured has been there, but the point is still well-taken.
If you have any doubt, see how far your curiosity about the pomp and circumstances surrounding the chancellors coronation will take you. Were you invited to the ceremony? Think you can get anywhere near the festivities? How close do you think UC Police will allow dissenting voices to get to the sensitive ears of the Regents?

Gee, I can't imagine why there would be extensive security at this event!
It's not like..
-radicals have been spraypainting all over the UC.
-someone bit a cop at a "rally"
-the surveillance cameras were taken down and destroyed
-treesitters have been emptying barrels of waste into toilets (not very effectively)
oh, wait, all those things have happened!
Now you complain about security?

Apparently UC Staffer has been too busy on a coffee break and long lunches since everyone was invited. It was open to the public. Tickets were available over a month ago and, oh yeah, they were FREE!! Guess UC Staffer is not one of the "best and brightest". Then him and others here wonder why they have no credibility.
As already mentioned above, tickets were free and announcement of their availability was widely announced via campus-wide emails, web announcements, and SCTicket website.
So those who wanted to see it got to see it. SC Staffer is spinning fluff and misinformation.
And there was a protest, right after the ceremony ended and the reception began. It was the best kind too; intelligent, peaceful, loud and proud. Every guest there heard it, but the protesters didn't try the idiotic guerrilla theater tactics that have become associated with "activists" at UC. The protesters delivered their message and pamphlets, were seen and heard, and got their message across.
IMO, that is the way a protest should be run, and I suspect most UC staffers feel the same way. Because, regardless of the salary issue, they still have respect for their co-workers who are working that event. And they know that acting like spoiled children doesn't sway opinion, hearts, or minds. Kudos to all the UCSC AFSME staff who protested in the best of ways today.
...and then this afternoon, some morons (many of whom are l not staff but rather students or visiting AFSMCE members), blockaded Mission and Bay.
Way to go; you've pissed off all the folks who were undecided on this issue and polarized them towards NOT supporting you. I'm sure it pumped you up and gave you ego gratification, but it set back your goal of garnering support rather than furthering it.
