STATEMENT
The following is a joint statement from the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union regarding contract negotiations concerning UC patient care and service employees
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
University of California officials and representatives of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union today (May 29) jointly announced that they will be returning to the bargaining table to continue negotiations for new labor contracts for the more than 20,000 UC patient care and service workers that AFSCME represents.
The State Mediation and Conciliation Service has recommended that the parties continue bargaining, and negotiations will resume at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 30 with the assistance of a neutral third-party mediator.
Accordingly, the union will not be striking UC medical centers and campuses on June 4 and 5 as previously announced.
Both UC and AFSCME are committed to bargaining in good faith, and hope to reach an agreement soon.
UC and AFSCME have been in negotiations for the last ten months for a new contract for more than 11,000 UC patient care technical employees, and for the last seven months for a new contract for 8,000 UC service employees.
The 20,000 patient care and service workers include a wide variety of jobs including, but not limited to, medical technologists who take x-rays, MRIs, and mammograms; respiratory therapists who operate breathing machines; medical assistants who clean wounds, bathe and turn patients to prevent infections and bed sores; cleaners who disinfect medical instruments and patient areas; custodians who clean the hospitals and campus dorms; and food service workers who provide cafeteria service to patients and students.

STRIKE IS OFF!!!!
PLEASE FORWARD AS NECESSARY:
THE UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN GETTING AN
INJUNCTION AGAINST THE AFSCME STRIKE. IT IS CALLED OFF. There will
almost certainly be various militant actions on all of the campuses
next week, but not a work stoppage. So ignore all of the earlier
messages about strike actions on June 4th and 5th, announcing the
strike in your classes, etc. We will try to post you on any planned
actions next week as we find out about them so you can encourage your
students and colleagues to participate or support them.
The University's Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) issued by PERB
(the Public Employee Relations Board) is almost certainly flawed and
would be overturned by a higher court, but that would take at least a
week and by then most classes are over. Consequently, AFSCME decided
to call off the strike at this time.

it's true that the strike has been postponed.
it's also true that the fucking uc executives pulled some string with the republican-dominated public employees relations board to say that the uc still has some stuff to offer the union.
they're just trying to break our spirit, so hold strong. the workers need us now more than ever!

The UC is going to deserve whatever comes its way. Stay united! Stay strong!

Re: Non-strike activities this week
As was communicated to the UCSC community last week, University of
California officials and representatives of the American Federation of
State, County and Municipal Employees union have jointly announced that
they are returning to the bargaining table to continue negotiations for new
labor contracts for the more than 20,000 UC patient care and service
workers that AFSCME represents.
See joint statement about resumption of collective bargaining:
UC posting -- http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/article/17920
AFSCME posting -- http://www.local3299.org/documents/JointStatement.pdf
As indicated in the statement, the union will not be striking UC medical
centers and campuses on June 4 and 5, as previously announced.
But non-strike activities, such as informational pickets, have begun on
this campus and may take place on other UC campuses and medical centers
this week.
Should non-strike activities make it necessary for the campus to
communicate information to you about transportation and other UCSC
operations, that information will be available via:
-- The campus's Emergency Communications hotline (459-INFO), which will
provide recorded information if necessary
-- UCSC's home page (http://www.ucsc.edu), which will include a link to
updated information on
http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/info_picket/afscme_06-08/
-- KZSC Radio (88.1 FM), which will broadcast operational information if
necessary
Please stay informed, plan ahead, and anticipate possible transportation
delays.
Thank you.
