Memorial Day for Memorial Oak Grove
We had a party for the Oaks on Memorial Day
We have been trying to save the Oaks with tree sits for almost 18 months. They were set aside as a memorial to US soldiers who died in WWI. Now the university wants to cut them down and we want to remember, memorialize, those fighting for a better world. Some of those we thought of that day were Brad Will (former forest defender who was shot in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2006), Felicitas and Teresa (two indigenous Oaxacan women from a community radio station shot in April), and Beth O'Brien/Horehound (who fell to her death from a tree sit in Oregon in 2002). many people gathered and the scene was very mellow as for as the police passed by but did not bother us. There was great food and musicians, friends and new people.
