Dear Everyone,
On Tuesday May 27, at noon, in front of the offices of the San
Francisco Chronicle, I and several other members of the California
Impeachment Slate will hold a press
conference to get out the word that, in twenty districts statewide,
pro-impeachment candidates are challenging the passive incumbents in
the US House of Representatives. The Chronicle offices are located at
901 Mission (Fifth and Mission Streets) in San Francisco. There is a
BART stop one block away and an inexpensive parking garage directly
across the street. Many of you work downtown, and we've scheduled this
at lunch hour, hoping that you might join us.
At this press conference, we will also issue an invitation to Monica
Conyers, spouse of House Judiciary Committee Chair John Conyers,
asking her to join us -- asking her to run for her husband's seat.
(Read our invitation below.)
And please wish us luck.

"Tired of the old sham? Write in Newsham!"
(For US Congress, June 3 Democratic primary, District 9. Please.)
Dear Ms. Conyers,
The members of the California Impeachment Slate applaud your
courageous stand for impeachment. And we invite you to take an even
bolder step: Will you please run for Congress on a pro-impeachment
platform with us? Yes, please run for the seat currently held by your
husband, the Honorable John Conyers, Chair of the House Judiciary
Committee.
For several years, Mr. Conyers was the brightest light, the strongest
and most eloquent voice in the impeachment movement. We read his books
detailing the "High Crimes of the Bush Administration." We applauded
his "Blueprint for Impeachment." Many of us worked feverishly to get
Democrats elected, and when Congress went Democratic in November 2006,
we were ecstatic.
But the votes had barely even been counted when Mr. Conyers suddenly
reversed direction, suddenly went all Nancy Pelosi on us: "Impeachment
is off-the-table." We were crushed.
Then, in May 2007, we took great heart from the pro-impeachment
resolution that you introduced in front of the Detroit City Council.
When it was passed unanimously, excited emails and phone calls flew
through the impeachment movement. "Here...," we said to each other,
"Here is a woman with some guts."
We still believe the things we read in your husband's books. This
time of national and international crisis calls not for back-stepping,
but for forward-stepping. We believe that you, Ms. Conyers, are a
forward-stepping woman. And we invite you to join us.
We recognize the personal difficulties this might cause you and your
family. But the crimes of the Bush administration have jeopardized
families across the country: some of our marriages have been put under
tremendous strain; some of us have lost offspring in the illegal war;
and the whole world has seen our looted economy bouncing against the
ropes.
We believe that the people of Detroit will respond loudly and proudly
to a Monica Conyers for Congress announcement. We also believe that
your husband will be moved.
Politicians are not meant to hold office forever. When a politician
comes upon a job too challenging to face, he or she should step aside
in favor of someone who is not afraid to act.
We think that YOU are that someone, Ms. Conyers. And we invite you to
join us.
With utmost sincerity and respect for you and your husband, and above
all for this country we all hold so dearly.
