We're a group of UCSC students that just got back from the Student Volunteer Center Alternative Spring Break to New Orleans. We worked with a student group called SAFER, Student Advocates For Equitable Recovery in New Orleans installing drywall and painting homes devastated by the floods that took the city after Hurricane Katrina.

This was the second trip for a few of us, and what we have found difficult it is explaining what we saw in New Orleans. This year we decided to construct a photography exhibit, focusing on what the city looks like today: two and a half years after the levees broke.

The photography was taken by four students: Paige Miller, Christina Peterson, David Russel and Nicole Marie Teutschel, and is now on display at Firefly Coffee House in Santa Cruz.

Contact us (volunteer [at] ucsc.edu , http://volunteer.ucsc.edu) if you have any questions or to learn more about supporting Alternative Spring Break or SAFER.

We’re planning an open house fundraiser for SAFER in a couple weeks at the Firefly. Email us if you'd like to receive info on that event (volunteer [at] ucsc.edu).

We would like to thank Firefly Coffee House in hosting our exhibit. Firefly is a pretty awesome place: free wifi, killer coffee, yummy treats, and a sweet outdoor patio! http://www.fireflycoffee.com/index.html
