The Governor first proposed raising fees by 7.4% for undergrads, up to 20% for grads, and on top of that, cutting $332 million from the UC system in January. Word on the hill was that the Governor's cuts could mean fee hikes of up to 20% next year and Provost Hume and many Regents refused to admit that fee hikes would hurt the accessibility of our university.
Last week Regents were seriously considering a 15% fee increase. This week, Provost Hume said "he could not ask students to pay more than the possible 10 percent increase because raising fees puts access for low- and middle-income students at risk" to the SF Chronicle. This Wednesday, Regents will vote on proposals for a 10% increase, 7.4% increase or fee freeze. Our organizing has changed the debate around fees so far and we are going to keep the pressure up.
Protest @ the Regents Meeting: Wed. May 14th, 11am @ UCLA Covel Commons
On the Monday following the Governor's budget revise, we'll take our message to the state legislator asking them to protect students from the Governor's proposed cuts and fee increases!
Study-In @ the Capitol: Mon. April 19th, 6am - 6pm @ the state capitol
As UC, CSU and Community College students approach finals week, bring your books to the capitol and instead of a sit-in, have a "study-in" for higher ed funding.
