Bali Reddy was born in 1937 in Velvadam village in the

The plea bargain hearing for Reddy, his sons Vijay
Kumar Lakireddy and Prasad Lakireddy, his brother
Jayprakash Lakireddy and his brother's wife Annapurna
Lakireddy, is expected to occur next week in Oakland
Federal Court.

Vijay Lakireddy had been charged with three, including
visa fraud, for helping to illegally bring the Indian
girls into the United States to work in Reddy's
businesses. "We are just crying," said Hanimireddy
Lakireddy, Reddy's brother.

(The city estimated that Reddy and his family owned
$69,714,083 in real estate, most of it in Berkeley.
She said he also "hoarded gold and cash" in a suitcase
under a bed in his house.)

One of the city's most prominent property owners is
accused in federal court of bringing underage girls
from his native India for sex

(Reddy's son's company, Active Tech Solutions, had 21
applications with INS for temporary workers, though
the company has had between one and four employees
since 1998, the affidavit said.)

(Lakireddy Reddy came to the U.S. when he was in his
20s, from the southern India state of Andhra Pradesh,
his son said. He studied engineering at Cal and earned
a graduate degree, then took a good job with an East
Bay engineering firm.)

"The little money that he could save, he invested in
real estate," said Prasad Reddy.

(In 1985, he said, Lakireddy Reddy and his siblings
opened a food stand in the EmeryBay Public Market in
Emeryville. Four years later, the family opened Pasand
Madras Cuisine on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley,
offering authentic Indian fare with "imported herbs
and spices."

The family has since opened restaurants in Santa
Clara, San Rafael and San Francisco, and Reddy had
plans to open more.)

(Reddy came to the attention of Berkeley police Nov.
24, when a 17-year-old girl known as Seetha Vemireddy
died in her sleep at a Bancroft Way apartment building
owned by Reddy. Investigators later found a faulty
wall heater had spewed high levels of deadly carbon
monoxide into the apartment, killing the girl and
hospitalizing her 15-year-old sister.)

Last Defendant to Plead In Sex Slavery Tragedy

The older son of notorious Berkeley landlord
Lakireddy Bali Reddy was scheduled to enter a guilty
plea today, Friday, Oct. 31, as part of the agreement
that will complete the prosecution of family members
for smuggling young Indian girls into the country for
sex and cheap labor.

Prasad Lakireddy, 44, was scheduled to stand trial in
January on charges of immigration fraud and witness
tampering. Last April, federal prosecutors had dropped
the more severe charge of travel with intent to engage
in sex with a juvenile.

Lakireddy is the last member of his family to face
prosecution. His father, brother, aunt and uncle all
accepted plea bargains.

The family members were charged after the death of
17-year old Chanti Prattpati from carbon monoxide
poisoning Nov. 24, 1999, in a Berkeley apartment owned
by the Reddys. The girl’s 15-year-old sister survived
the gas poisoning, caused by a blocked heating vent.
She told federal authorities that she and her sister
were flown to the United States and forced to have
sex.

Lakireddy attorney Paul Wolf and federal prosecutor
Stephen Corrigan did not return calls about the plea
to be offered before U.S. District Judge Claudia
Wilken, who will then schedule a sentencing hearing.

Last November, Wilken sentenced Lakireddy’s younger
brother Vijay to two years in a minimum security
prison after he entered a guilty plea to one count of
immigration fraud.

Prasad, Vijay and their father, Lakireddy Bali Reddy,
are the subjects of a $100 million class action civil
suit filed last year by nine Indian women and the
parents of two others.
