Just a shout-out for my class on Friday. The idea here is to move beyond basic security culture -- usually just practiced as a defensive measure -- to more offensive ways of discovering what our adversaries are up to and covering our own activities from the prying eyes of governments, corporations, and fascists.

Intel and Counter-Intel for Activists Big Yellow House, 742 N Branciforte Ave with Rico & Chas thespoon@thespoon.com

Beyond basic defensive security culture, how do we get the information we need to effectively change the world and fight tyranny? We'll talk about a collection of techniques used to manipulate people into performing actions or divulging confidential information that can be used against authoritarians and tyrants. Social engineering, confidence games, Internet research and tools, back stories, plausible deniability, and sneaking around. Learn how to use open web sources, perform target development, and to organize your group for success. Will discuss both practical methods and general intelligence/counter-intelligence theory.

§CLASS CANCELED, soon to be rescheduled
by Rico
Unavoidable and unexpected challenge. This class is canceled for now and will be rescheduled. Sorry about that. Other teacher had an unexpected conflict.

Well, manipulating others, isn't really the best way to put it. That description of what social engineering is, came in part form wikipedia. I guess it is more along the lines of telling others what they expect to hear so they will give you information you need. But we'll discuss it more at the class.

ha. I work for a division of federal government, and we had to read a bulletin on not downloading viruses and also those friendly social engineers coming up to ask you about your password

"Manipulating people"? Gee, Rico, you sound like a bit of an authoritarian yourself! You are basically listing the things that fascists do.

I thought you were on OUR side?
