Blockade of UC Regents Meeting
Many came to SF to protest war, as part of this and for other issues, dozens of students blockaded the UC Regents meeting at UCSF Mission Bay.
The University of California has many problems. UC Berkeley is the worst. They helped develop and build every nuclear bomb in the US arsenal. There are 13,000 native American remains in cardboard boxes in a basement under the pool. They want to cut down the memorial Oak Grove to build a gym on a major fault line. Perhaps the most problematic aspect of the Regents is the utter lack of democracy in the Regents. They are appointed by the governor to make all major decisions for the UC system but only one is a student and the rest are almost all rich white men who do not even live near universities that they run. Some students even think that they should have a say in how the university is run.
So, while others protested the war in Iraq, students locked down to the building. They used quality u-locks and the police bent several bolt cutters and the fire department broke a jaws of life before giving up. The Regents were ushered into a fire exit and later a few lock downs were broken through. Later the police dismantled the doors and arrested the students with locks still around their necks. The students also had a press conference, a students meeting and went into the regents meeting. When the action ended there they joined in the events in downtown against the war.
