BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The People's Voice Town Hall meeting is a community forum to discuss empowerment through creative expression and new technology. How can creative expression lead to healing? How do we build local sustainable economies through community based projects that reflect our social and ecological values?

The connection between communities telling their own stories and healing as a moral, social, political and economic necessity, can no longer be ignored. It is through the personal story that we can connect with others and know that we are not alone. It is through this personal expression that communities can move towards creating ideas for the future and bring about real social change.

New technology creates unlimited possibilities for each of us to become media makers. It de-centralizes access to media and gives communities a space to represent themselves. In order to discuss new technology linked to creative expression, we have to talk about Digital Inclusion, and how to make the new media tools and the knowledge base accessible to everyone.

What role can community based media play in bridging the digital divide? Pacifica Radio has been a beacon of free speech for over 50 years. As a community sponsored radio network, Pacifica has entrusted its future to the hands of the community, for financial support and guidance. There is an untapped power that lives within the communities who do not know media institutions such as Pacifica exist. When these voices are reached, heard and reflected back, relevancy becomes the underlying strength to build from.

So the apprentices have a program that is used to provide them a means to demonstrate their abilities to make good radio on the air, and so their program is being pre-empted for a bunch of discontented and entrenched staff, paid and unpaid, to voice their gripes and angst over having to produce programs that are so uninteresting that no one listens to them or pledges when they call for subscriptions.

That describes the value of this staged "town hall". Next thing you know, they'll be calling Nicole Sawaya a "white supremacist"...oh, wait, one of them already did.

Put the apprentices back on and let real programming be on KPFA!

You seem to have missed that the Town Hall was *organized by* the apprenticeship program. The primary organizer is the director who runs the First Voice Apprenticeship program.

"'Old Lib'' is a psuedonym for Mark Hernandez . Hernandez was the rep of KFCF (Fresno ) on the KPFA Local Station Board until he was voted out in Jan , with only one member of the KFCF board , Deb Speer voting to retain him.
Despite that ,the "' Concerned Listeners'' clique who currently have a majority on the KPFA board and are closely allied with KPFA mgmt. , had him appointed secretary of the board for 'services rendered ''.. (Whether or not they also put him on payroll is unclear )
Mark aka Old Lib (for libertarian ) has slandered those trying to maintain and save KPFAand Pacifica for years now .
Back to tonight's meeting ,KPFA mgmt. have prohibited the scheduled Broadcast , in effect reinstating the ''gag rule '' of the 90's .

Friday's event was excellent . Dozens of people came , many of them people of color . Emotional disappointment expressed at the direction of Pacifica . Many examples of the lack of coverage of our communities . Solidarity with the organizers of the April sixth forum . The much attacked Richard Phelps appaluded. How dare those running KPFA prevent this event from being broadcast !!!!!!

This was a great event! I was inspired by the panelists and moderator. Good topics and important community issues being raised. I get it, expression is so important for people to move forward. Great job First Voice! Also the crowd had a lot to say about KPFA management pulling this off the air. Too bad.
