Students for a Free Tibet on the largest Tibetan uprising since 1959

by Kate Woznow
We’re hearing nonstop reports of an uprising in Lhasa and across Tibet. Chinese authorities are responding with brute force today to ongoing protests and Tibetans are reporting tanks in the streets, houses burning and gun shots. Thousands of armed troops have sealed off the three major monasteries where nonviolent protests were initiated on Monday and Chinese police continue to fire live ammunition into crowds of unarmed Tibetans. Unconfirmed reports from eye-witnesses in Lhasa say that up to 80 Tibetans are dead, 26 of who were gunned down outside Drapchi prison.
As of today, these are the largest protests in Tibet in 50 years and the timing and scale of this truly national uprising in Tibet is unprecedented. Years of China’s repressive policies, repeated denunciations of the Dalai Lama, and the violent response to peaceful demonstrations by monks earlier this week have aggravated the tensions and contributed to the desperation felt by Tibetans throughout Tibet. Five months away from the Beijing Olympics, the situation in Tibet is critical and demands international attention. As the Olympics approach and the world’s eyes turn to Beijing, this outpouring of frustration is the natural consequence.

When China takes center-stage this August, Students for a Free Tibet will be there to shine the light of public scrutiny on the Chinese occupation of Tibet and demand a resolution to the issue. When the Chinese government wants to look its best and hide their worsening human rights record, Tibetans and supporters will show solidarity with the 6 million Tibetans inside Tibet who have been systematically denied their rights and freedoms for over 50 years. It was only a matter of time before Tibetans inside Tibet rose up and challenged the Chinese government for its illegal and brutal occupations of their homeland and it’s only a matter of time before Tibet will once again be an independent nation.

Solidarity protests are happening or scheduled to happen around the world. In Vancouver, local Tibetans and supporters are staging protests on Saturday, March 15th (late afternoon and all evening; possibly even over night) in front of the Chinese Consulate at Granville near West 16th Ave.

Tibet will be free.
