Update on DQU: Community Meeting Tonight, Board Meeting Saturday

by Dan Bacher
This is the latest update on the situation at DQU from Christal West. The students, including the three arrested, returned to DQU today. I was over there for a couple of hours to interview the students. There will be an emergency meeting tonight at 7 pm at UC Davis South Hall and a Board of Trustees meeting on Saturday at 11 a.m. For more information, you can contact Ignacio Barragan at (714) 423-0716 or Christal West at (916)204-3367 or mecha [at] ucdavis.edu
***PLEASE FORWARD AND REPOST!!!*****

DQ University is not only the only Tribal University in California but also the only university in the nation that teaches Natives and Chicanos without requirement of Indian Blood Quantum. The University's education is embedded in Self Determination and the recognition of OUR story.

4 years ago, it lost its accreditation due to poor management from their board of trustees. Their board is represented by a few selected officials from one nation of native Americans who are holding a monopoly over the school curriculum.

I can not begin to explain to you the gravity of the situation, but I can say that 3 of their students who continue to live on the campus and participate in regular classes, even without accreditation, were arrested for trespassing on February 20, 2008 (please see link below for footage of arrests). They have since been released through bail, but the harm has been done.

Residents at DQ University are planning to address the Board of Trustees, who they feel are infringing on their efforts to regain their accreditation. Please share this information with any of your officials in your community. We would like to raise awareness about the issue and gain support for the Residents at DQ!

There will be a Meeting at DQ University on Saturday Feb. 23, 2008 @ 11:00 am. Please come and bring as many people interested in helping. Our intentions are to support these community members by being visibly present.

Also, we are looking for any avenues by which we can get some press on this issue. If you know of anyone who can lend their support, even if it's just within your community, please let me know. If you have any contacts who could offer their legal advice, we would appreciate that too.

You can contact (Ignacio Barragan) at (714) 423-0716 or Christal West at (916)204-3367 or mecha [at] ucdavis.edu

Let it be said, DQ University is the last of a long tradition motivated to keep alive the spirit of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. We invite anyone who thinks extinction is unacceptable to join us in our fight!!!

Meeting @ UC Davis South Hall Today Feb. 21, 2008 @ 7:00 pm (emergency coalition mtg)

Meeting @ DQ University Saturday Feb. 23, 2008 @ 11:00 am (WE NEED PEOPLE AT THE BOARD MEETING SATURDAY!! Put Pressure on the Board of Trustees!! Address: 33250 County Rd 31 Davis, CA)

Yah Ah Teeh from the Navajo Nation: The Board of Trustee needs to re-evaulate the meaning of being a leader. There is a fine line between dictatorship, being an authoriarian and being a genuine leader. A good leader always listen to their people and takes advice from them. Leaders should humble themselves by taking the time to listen to everyone concerns. A leader should function under the pretense and belief that all people are equal, that all have an equal voice and that all have a fundamental human right to be heard. No leader should suppress the voices of their people. If an occassion should arrise where the peoples voices are suppress then the peolpe have a fundamental and constitutional right to resist and fight for thier freedom of speech. The oppression of student voices gives that right to resist just like way the forefathers of the whiteman have done in the past. No difference in the tactics that they employed many moons ago. Today they are consider heros of the whitemans history and called fathers of a supposed great nation. A leader should not bestow upon their constiuents violence, nor resort to degrading their people by calling them names such as "punks" as in the assualt video. This only shows the lack of character, lack of care and love for young students that only want whats best for themselves and future generations. Young natives, chicanos and other indiginous peoples need a place of learning without fear of arrest, oppression, intimidation and harassment. This only impedes the learning process and causes much anger and ill feels towards your fellow man. As leaders let the peolpe go first, don't ask for special treatment, think of other peoples wellbeing before thinking of your own, share your knowledge, wealth and love. Just remember whenever you think bad thoughts and do bad things to a person or to people this will only return to you and affect you in your personal lives. Remember the Holy people are watching what you do. Have a heart and remember that a native mind is terrible thing to waste. I will be informing numerous other important authoritative people of brown color here in my region. All Natives need to unite and fight this illness that has spread amoung the native peoples. We need to help one another, care for one another and look out for each other. If your fellow man needs help lend a helping hand. Remember their are very few natives left in this country lets not fight amoung ourselves. I speak out because when I first went to the whitemans school I did not know one word of english. All I knew was Navajo and they told me I was going to have a hard time in school for the rest of my life. Hahahaha!!! Look who has the last laugh. I was punished throughout my grade school for talking Navajo but they never broke me as soon as my punishment was done the first words to come out of my mouth would be in Navajo. I did this just to defy them and to let them know that they cannot oppress or suppress my Freedom of Native Speech, for the Holy People have given me this voice to be heard and no earth surface people has the right to take that away. May Beauty, Harmony and Balance be restore to your small community and university.

There are no students at DQU. There are only individuals who are living off the campus free of no cost or no obligation and provide not one penny to help out with the electical costs. These people want to be part of a so called struggle (their struggle) to stay at the DQ campus free of no obligation. The dorm were they are housed is messed up, and will cost to clean up but they will not help to clean or pay for damage. These are young abled body people who can go to work and take care of themselves and quit begging for money. Don't send them money, you need to know what your giving will create at the other end. They have no respect for women and elders like they want people to believe. They go out and sing their songs and commit astrocities against Tribal Indian people in the state of California. California Indians need to unit! This is our college and not others that treat our California people like we're a pile of crap!!

Dear Tribal Elder,
Not to be negative, but it sounds like you have the wrong story and opinion. You sound brainwashed...this isnt the time to take sides and turn Indians against Indians. This school is about education and a future future for all Indigenous..Do you not know what DQ literally stands for?

Secondly, If you as an elder have sat down and prayed with these young men staying at DQ, YOU WOULD SEE they speak from their hearts. They would rather keep DQ education and spirit alive rather than pass it off to Yolo County and Duane Chamberlain to create a DQ police training facility....

What would you like to see? Peace or WAR?
They are speaking out because, no one else will. They have tried to get together with the board, and the board conveniently cancels their meetings....
thank you
