Meet at 558 Capp St. ( in the Mission at 21st St. )
On June 3 there will be an initiative on the ballot disguised as a proposition for eminent domain reform. Hidden inside this bill is a ban on all rent control in the state of California (the bill also stands to threaten inclusionary housing laws and many environmental protections). The people behind Proposition 98, aka "the hidden agenda bill," are a particularly evil group of developers and big property owners along with the malicious Howard Jarvis Taxpayer's Association.
Key to saving rent control in June wil be ensuring that renters are registered and renters vote. June is typically a low turnout election–which is why landlords chose this election–so we need to work extra harder to get tenants to the polls. The campaign begins in earnest Saturday, February 16, with a voter registration mobilization. We'll be meeting at 10 AM at the San Francisco Tenants Union, 558 Capp St. (in the Mission at 21st St). We'll meet and then go set up tables at key intersections or door to door (both to register voters and to get current renter voters signed up as absentee voters). Lots of volunteers will be needed, so try to come!
