Damairia Pakpahan has been a grassroots activist since the 1980s during Dictator Suharto’s regime. For more than a decade, her activism has centered around supporting female domestic workers and their children through organizing a domestic workers’ union, advocacy, public policy, campaigns, basic and alternative education and support for individual families. She has also worked on issues around child protection, child labor, political prisoner support, and solidarity with the people of Timor Leste, Aceh, and West Papua.
