----
Wed. Mar. 19th
DIRECT ACTIONS ON THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE IRAQ WAR: DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO Multiple actions at multiple locations.
Join an existing action against a government or corporate target, or plan and carry out your own! Help send a clear message to the economic and political interests behind this war: We will actively confront you every step of the way until the war is ended.
Sat. Mar. 15th
DIRECT ACTION & RALLY: CHEVRON RICHMOND REFINERY 11am Rally at Judge G. Carroll Park W. Cutting Blvd & S. Garrard Blvd, Richmond 1pm Nonviolent Direct Action at Chevron Refinery
841 Chevron Way, Richmond
(Ongoing shuttle buses from RICHMOND BART)
Chevron is profiting from the war in Iraq; the company is a primary driver behind the U.S. Government's campaign to pressure the Iraqi Parliament to privatize the country's oil fields so companies like Chevron can control and profit from the war. Chevron's Richmond Refinery processes Iraqi oil and pollutes the surrounding population of poor communities and communities of color.
Early Feb.
ACTIONS AGAINST PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
(stay tuned for details)
Let's ensure that candidates take a stand against the war during the 2008 presidential campaign.
----
March 19th, 2008. The fifth anniversary of the U.S. government's illegal war in Iraq for oil and global domination is upon us. Five years later, and no weapons of mass destruction has been found, the country has descended into civil war, and the lives of over 3900 U.S. soldiers and over 600,000 Iraqis have been lost.
Meanwhile, Iraq's oil is being refined at Chevron's Richmond Refinery and other refineries across the country, polluting nearby poor communities and communities of color, and contributing to global warming, the greatest environmental threat humanity has ever faced. Our dangerous addiction to oil and empire has to end.
The U.S. Government has spent $2.8 trillion dollars in the last five years on war. We could spend $2.8 trillion on peace, universal health care, education and rebuilding an ecologically sane society. Ask yourself: What could we do with $2.8 trillion?
STEP IT UP
Neither the Democrats or Republicans have demonstrated a genuine commitment to stop this war. Both parties have consistently voted to approve war spending.
It's time for us to step up the pressure on the corporations (like Bechtel and Chevron) and political leaders that are driving this war, and all unsustainable and unjust wars for resources and empire.
As a movement of grassroots people power, we have the power to accomplish enormous social change. The direct action protests in Seattle in 1999 against the World Trade Organization (WTO) generated global public attention, and inspired ongoing major protests and opposition to the point where the WTO is essentially in a coma. The anti-war movement can achieve similar success.
