The 2008 Golden Gate National Recreation Area Endangered Species Big Year is a race against time to see and save each of the Park's endangered species.
The GGNRA contains more endangered species than any other national park in continental North America: more than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, & Sequoia National Parks combined. This is both cause for celebration and concern, and the 2008 GGNRA Endangered Species Big Year is your chance to learn more about these incredible species while helping them recover.
On January 6, 2008, the Endangered Species Big Year kick-off party begins at 1pm at the San Francisco Zoo. Come see Endangered Species Act success stories like the Bald Eagle and the Peregrine Falcon, along with local endangered species that still need our help, like the San Francisco Garter Snake, North America's most beautiful serpent. Load-up on some snacks and beverages, and then take an easy hike to see your first Big Year species: the threatened Western Snowy Plover, which clings to survival at the GGNRA's Ocean Beach. The event is free!
