BANISHED chronicles the history of three counties that forcefully banished African American families from towns one hundred years ago-and the descendants that return to find a shocking history.
Also Featuring "The Apollos" a Bay Area Video Coalition youth produced short by Jazmin Jones and Nick Parker. "The Apollos," a piece of local history that chronicles the struggle of a high school senior class to pass a bill making Martin Luther King’s birthday a national holiday.
Presented By: ITVS Community Cinema, KQED Education Network, The Oakland Museum of California, The Oakland Film Office and Hands On Bay Area
Co-Sponsors: Museum of the African Diaspora, Colorlines Magazine, Just Cause Oakland and Bay Area Video Coalition.
A panel will follow to discuss the theme of displacement: past, present and future with a look at gentrification, post Hurricane Katrina right of return and the historical legacy of racism on housing.
