San Francisco Women Against Rape trains sexual assault peer counselors three times a year. Our next training is beginning January 23, 2008 and lasts for approximately 5 weeks, on Mondays & Wednesdays 5:30 - 9:00 pm and Saturdays 9:30 - 5:30p.m. Applications are due December 5th in order to be considered for the training.
Multi-cultural/Multi-lingual volunteers especially needed to provide Multi Lingual Access to services. $125 Stipend paid upon completion of MLAM training + $18-20/hr for services in languages other than English.
People of color, youth, transgender and genderqueer, immigrant, elderly, queer, working class, and differently-abled individuals are encouraged to apply for participation in our volunteer trainings. You must be 18 or over to apply. MLAM stipend is available for multi-cultural/multi-lingual volunteers. We have volunteer opportunities available in these areas:
Counseling Program
Peer Counseling: Peer counselors staff the 24-hour hotline, conduct in-person counseling sessions, facilitate support groups, and counsel survivors in the hospital.
Community Initiatives
Community Outreach: Volunteers table at events, distribute our materials to community centers, research, and keep our outreach center up to date.
Presentations: Volunteers present on a range of topics from What Is Sexual Assault to Anti-Oppression. These presentations are given to youth and adults.
Curriculum Development: Volunteers research and develop curriculum to be used in presentations.Fundraising
Special Events: Volunteers work on SFWAR special events like Dine for a Change and Artists Against Rape.
Administative Work
Databases: Volunteers help us keep our databases up to date.

Our volunteers constantly tell us that they grow enormously, both personally and politically, from the volunteer training and find the work to be tremendously important and rewarding.
