Buy Nothing Day Caroling!
Friday, 11/23, 2pm - 4pm
Union Square, intersection of Geary & Stockton
downtown San Francisco
Join Globalize This! for a festive day of Buy Nothing Day Caroling, in which we'll be singing from a songsheet of global justice, anti-corporate, anti-consumerism lyrics in a fun parody of Christmas Carols. We will be performing the carols for shoppers in Union Square, a square known for its luxury shopping and expensive stores, on the busiest shopping day of the year, the day after Thanksgiving.
Please wear red or green, a Santa hat, or that tacky Christmas sweater in the back of your closet, and get ready to sing! We will have a few signs (decked in holiday cheer) reading "Caroling against Consumerism" and other slogans. While most people will be singing, a few people will be handing out flyers and soliciting donations from shoppers to raise funds for the struggle against CAFTA in Costa Rica.
The day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year. On this day corporations and businesses try to inaugurate a season of wasteful shopping. Buy Nothing Day represents a counterpoint to the culture of mass consumerism that is destroying the environment, redefining and destroying our cultures, and leading to the exploitation of workers in other countries. We encourage you not to buy anything on this day.
Globalize This! is a group dedicated to global justice. We have been working with our contacts in Costa Rica with Bloque Verde to continue to oppose the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Right now we are building a coalition of groups including groups in Perú, Colombia, South Korea, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and El Salvador to oppose U.S.-based free trade agreements in each of these countries - it means opposition to NAFTA, CAFTA, the Peru-US Trade Promotion Agreement, the Colombia-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, and the South Korea-US Free Trade Agreement among others. We are also working on building a economic justice calendar for 2008 which will include an anti-corporate globalization activist camp in early 2008 as well as summer actions to follow.
