Through A Western Lens: Representations of the Other

Although we live in a “global village”, most of the information we receive about the world we live in seems to be a one-way flow. US media consumers are viewing themselves and cultural others through the eyes of dominant Western global discourse, which deploys various forms of representation to make domestic and international others “knowable”. In this series of workshops we will explore forms of mainstream representation of different peoples. We will investigate the roles of power relations, ideology, gender, colonial histories and economics and how they contribute to the popular understanding of these images. Activities will include presentations, panel discussions with guest speakers, viewing images and video clips , and animated group discussions. This series is sponsored by the Activism & Social Change emphasis area.
