Feature: Sister Spit: The Next Generation at The Rubber Rose
Sister Spit: The Next Generation, a radical queer womyn spoken-word group, performed to a full house at the Rubber Rose on October 18 as part of a month-long, cross-country tour. The tour reprises performances by the San Francisco lesbian feminist collective Sister Spit, co-founded by Sini Anderson and Michelle Tea, the organizer of the current group and MC.
The hour and a half show felt like a family gathering, with the performers keeping the audience smiling, laughing and alternately listening from the edge of their seats and slouching as if on the living room couch.
Dexter Flowers began with the story "The Gift that Keeps on Giving" about going feral at circus camp. Meliza Benales followed with two fast paced stories about her first threesome and the marks of an S&M relationship and a brand. Chelsea Starr read from "Chance" about a server working in a Spokane karaoke bar, jerking off and a glancing encounter with love. Special guest post-punk poet and member of the faculty at UCSD Eileen Myles showed a video, "Dumb Whore Palm," of the Spring 2007 Sister Spit tour and read from a story about S&M, dressing and identity. Kat Marie Yoaz told a story about a child from a fundamentalist family instigating a game of Adam and Eve. Tara Jepsen read a selection from her in-progress novel "Like a Dog" about two friends, one of whom has fallen in lust or love with the other. read two poems, the first about her relationship with America and the second called Pigeon Manifesto. Texta Queen, who makes friends by drawing pictures of them naked with felt tip markers, joined the tour from Australia and showed slides of drawings ranging from her sister and boyfriend in bed to a worker in a sex toy store (editor's note: NOT The Rubber Rose).
