Background: This effort was prompted when California Agricultural Secretary A.G. Kawamura began aerial spraying of pheromones and other undisclosed and potentially harmful chemical constituents over populated urban areas of Monterey County to combat the Light-brown Apple Moth (LBAM) against tremendous public outcry. Since, the Department of Agriculture is making plans to continue aerial spraying and expand spraying not only in Monterey County including Seaside, Marina, Pacific Grove, and Pebble Beach, but into neighboring counties like Santa Cruz. Our representatives including Assemblymember Laird and Monterey Mayor Chuck Della Sala seem to be powerless to stop it. The author of the petition believes that every individual has the right to choose not to be sprayed without consent unless there is a clear and present public health danger. Many are now reporting health problems since the start of the spray program. The citizens of California need to stand together with one voice that tells our politicians we will not stand for this. NO ONE has the right to spray us with ANYTHING without our consent. Let's take back control of the air we breathe!

This letter in the paper was pretty interesting.
The thing is, you might remember from high school chemistry that various compounds can change their behavior with the removal of one molecule, or if they have the cis- or trans- shape even. So one would have to know the nature of a specific chemical. At the same time, classes of compounds still will have similarities in their reactive nature. So, I bet this particular isocyanate isn't as immediately toxic as the bhopal disaster substance, but it is still worthy to take note of

------
Regarding the spray, we may have to suffer. The "inert" ingredients contain isocyanides.

The tragedy in Bohpal, India, that resulted in 3,000 deaths was caused by an isocyanide leak in the Union Carbide plant.

I am very familiar with isocyanide as my husband suffered a dose of it from a hot-melt glue his company was testing in Sand City. It resulted in his losing his job as head engineer when he could no longer do simple math, had short-term memory problems and respiratory problems.

He and the three other affected workers received a settlement with their company and the chemical company. One man subsequently died of respiratory failure, another ended up in psychiatric care, my husband and the other technician are still around and have recovered somewhat during the past 12 years.
