7 Islands and a Metroa film on Mumbai, the Irrepressible Metropolis
in conversation with director Madhusree Dutta

This film portrays multilingual Bombay, the Bombay of intolerance, closed mills, popular cultures, sprawling slums, real estate onslaught, the metropolis of numerous ghettos. This film, a mixed-genre tale of cities and bodies that make Bom Bahia / Bombay / Mumbai a metropolis, is woven around imaginary debates between Saadat Hasan Manto and Ismat Chugtai, two legendary writers who lived and worked in Bombay, over the art of chronicling these multi-layered overlapping cities.

Madhusree Dutta is the executive director of Majlis, a center of multicultural art initiatives and rights discourse in Mumbai. Ms. Dutta has been making non-fiction films around concerns of migration, gender, and identities since 1993. Her films are widely screened all over the world and have won several national awards. She has been the convener of the culture wing of the World Social Forum since 2003.
