Harassment of Homeless in RVs, a Letter from Donna Deiss

by Donna Deiss (posted by R. Norse) (spiritdancerocean [at] yahoo.com)
Donna Deiss, founder of LIVE (Living in Vehicles Excellently), has been organizing homeless folks whose affordable housing is their car, van, or RV. She previously created TRUSC (Tenants Rights Union of Santa Cruz). Some of her prior articles include:
Today I got the following e-mail from Donna Deiss:

Robert: I am under time constraints trying to use the library computer and not be cut off and not get another parking ticket so am asking for your help publishing this and the comments at the bottom. Indybay or anywhere you want to send it:

I am not responsible for the (3) parking tickets , SC00123925 & 0913545 [second citation the wrong citation -- it may be Case # 7SZ003403 {$248 bail due 11/08] because:

1) These tickets were given to me by Ranger John Wallacce after a new sign was put up overnight without public review on 8-21--2007.
2) Barring "motorhomes and trailers" from public parking lots (A,B, C & D) is a violation of the Constitution's 4th and 14th amendments. NO explanation given for this sign.
3) Ranger John Wallace acted "with prejudice" in barring motorhomes from Lot A, threatened me that my "motorhome would systematically be taken away." He also called 4 cop cars to the scene and terrified me as they had weapons. I am a 60 year old disabled woman.
4) I am caring for a terminally ile AIDS patient and this has created further hardships for us.

You can add that my motorhome is legal, pleasing to look at and the legal length for any public parking space (21 feet). I will send a copy of the letter I write to the judge and another Forum letter bringing this issue to public attention.

Please publish on Indybay or anywhere else you wish.

Thanks, Donna

Prayer Vigil for Homeless Hate Crime Victim

Homeless Resident of East Harlem Set on Fire by Unknown Assailant(s) Struggles for His Life

By Picture the Homeless via Nightwalker

Dear Friends and Family,

On Friday, a homeless man named Felix Najera who was sleeping on the sidewalk on 103rd St. between Park and Lexington in East Harlem was set on fire and suffered burns over 78% of his body in the latest local example of a disturbing nationwide trend of brutal hate crimes against people who are homeless.

Please see below for a press release issued jointly by the office of East Harlem City Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito and Picture the Homeless. In addition, we hope you will join us this Friday night, October 12, starting at 6pm, as we hold an all-night vigil in East Harlem - to pray for Felix, to vow that all life be respected, and to commit to ending the misguided policies that contribute to and exacerbate homelessness.

Thank you,

I am a feisty little activist in Redwood City, CA. Cop here attacked me for taking a 20-minute nap in my landscape truck. It made page 1 in several papers and you can google it. I won my case and now planning to appeal to CA Appeals Courts to STOP THIS NONSENSE. Let the homeless have LIFE, per Constitution. Would like to hear from anyone, esp. Robt. Norse and Kate Wells. Have no legal support. ACLU thinks the homeless problem is "too little" to bother with.
