IMPEACH! 4PEACE! Taking Action to the Streets of Berkeley: More Photos

by Robert B. Livingston (gruaudemais [at] yahoo.com)
Here are my last photos from Brad Newsham's 4th Beach Impeach Action in Berkeley, California. Brad was a taxicab driver who was tired of hearing people complain about the direction our country took after the Bush administration was installed in Washington, D.C.

He decided to do something personal: and imagined a simple and beautiful way to express his dissatisfaction with the Bush regime. He called it "Beach Impeach!"

If one follows the link to Brad Newsham's Beach Impeach website, one will find the latest aerial photos and video for his latest project, Beach Impeach Number 4. (There is lots more there as well.)

Here are the last of my snapshots of the days events.

After the action was over, numerous people rejoiced at having participated in a positive historical event. Many surrounded Brad to congratulate him for the events success-- and he in turn thanked them for their participation. What a wonderful day! Imagining our country restored and back into the hands of the people!

As the protesters broke up and headed homewards, about thirty protesters, holding signs and banners against war and for impeachment, marched from the marina area back to downtown Berkeley. Their object was to protest at a Military Recruitment Office.

On the way-- drivers of passing vehicles honked their horns in support. People remarked with pride from their doors and windows. Clearly, the protesters were heros in this community.

Sorting through these photos to share has been a particular joy-- looking at all the positive and clear-minded faces whose transparency of purpose and motive shines so brilliantly in the light of day: American Patriots who love their country and despise anyone who would seek to destroy it though selfishness and reckless disregard for others. What a contrast with the furtive criminality and manufactured resumes of so many corporate politicians in power-- with all their behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing!

What a pleasant thought: to imagine Cindy Sheehan as San Francisco's Congressperson, and Cynthia McKinney as our President! What a revolution! What a restoration of America's promise!

And it's possible to imagine-- thanks to the many people who can imagine along with Brad Newsham that their own ideas are as good as anybody else's-- and probably better!

Tommie seldom, if ever, misses any protest against war and the Bush administration. He has strong recollections of protesting in the sixties when war resisters were often victims of government heavyhandedness.

§Correction: The name of the Marimba Band is "Sadza"
by Robert B. Livingston (gruaudemais [at] yahoo.com)

The Sadza Marimba and Mbira Band is the correct name of the band, not "Saoza" as mentioned above.

In the San Franciscio Chronicle today, some interesting and curious factual details were reported that I neglected. (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/10/08/BAP9SLTRT.DTL)

For instance, the Chronicle pointed out that the jumpsuits some protesters wore were "Guantanamo" orange.

Of course.

However, absolutely no mention there of Cynthia McKinney's presence-- which didn't surprise me-- the Chronicle has a longstanding record of neglecting to say anything newsworthy or positive about the Green Party, or polticians that challenge its establishment worldview.

And that worldview? Inspiration comes primarily from credit cards and corporations like Google-- anything human is tawdry. Those criticisms aside, I had expected worse from San Francisco's leading newspaper.
