Shadya, a film on Israel-Palestine
in conversation with Manar Azriek
The film portrays Israeli society through the eyes of a seventeen year-old Muslim Palestinian karate champion. Shadya, the main character of the film, is forced to fight for her independence in a patriarchal society that refuses to allow a young girl to lead a life she chooses.
Manar Azriek grew up in a Palestinian family that was expelled from their village, Ellabon, during the 1948 war, and was able to return to Israel. Ms. Azriek was the National Judo Champion of Israel from 1988-1994. She has been working with Palestinian and Israeli youth as a teacher enabling dialogue both in Israel and internationally, toward healing and self-growth.
